What makes mobile controls actually good

Great games die on bad controls, and phones make this harder than consoles. There's no tactile feedback, your thumbs cover part of the screen, and every genre needs a different approach. Over time we've noticed what the good ones get right.

First, give players options. The best racers and arcade games let you switch between tilt, touch, and buttons. What feels natural varies hugely from person to person, and locking everyone into one scheme is a mistake.

Second, keep the action away from your thumbs. Placing important information or targets in the bottom corners, right where your hands sit, is a classic error. Good layouts leave the center clear.

Third, forgive small mistakes. A tiny bit of input assist — snapping a drift or widening a tap window — makes a game feel responsive rather than punishing. Big Rush Luck does this well; its timing is tight but never mean.
