Big Rush Luck

★★★★☆ 4.4 Editor rating

Big Rush Luck is one of those arcade games that looks simple from a screenshot and turns out to be surprisingly tricky once you start. You guide a little character through a bright, shifting track, and the whole thing is built around rhythm. Tap at the right moment and you flow forward; mistime it and the run ends. We tested it for about a week and kept coming back to beat our own distance.

The controls are the strong point. One thumb does everything, so it's easy to play standing on a bus. The game slowly ramps up speed as you go, and there's a nice tension to those later stretches where everything is moving fast and you're just trying not to break your rhythm. The art style is cheerful without being noisy, and the sound design actually helps you keep time.

It's not deep in the way an RPG is, and it doesn't pretend to be. This is a pick-up-and-play title for short sessions. What impressed us was how fair it feels — when you fail, it's almost always your own fault, which keeps you wanting one more try.
